How to Add Captions to Instagram Reels (Free, Step by Step)
A practical guide to adding accurate, good-looking captions to Reels: auto-generate, fix, style, place and export — without paying for an app.

Captions make a Reel watchable with the sound off, easier to follow in noisy places and more accessible to everyone. The good news: you can add them for free in a few minutes. This guide shows the whole workflow and the small decisions that make captions look professional.
1. Start with the right canvas
Reels are vertical: 1080 × 1920 pixels (9:16). Create your project at that size first so captions are positioned correctly from the beginning. In Cutlab the default canvas is already 9:16.
2. Generate captions automatically
- Open the editor and drop in your video.
- Open the Captions tab and choose the spoken language (or leave Auto-detect).
- Pick Original, Hinglish or English, then press Generate captions.
The first run downloads the speech model once; after that it is cached. Clear audio with limited background noise gives the best accuracy. For languages other than English use the Accurate setting.
3. Proofread — always
Auto-captions are very good but never perfect. Names, slang and brand terms are the usual misses. Click a caption in the list and fix the text; timing adjusts automatically.
4. Pick a style that matches your content
- Educational or talking-head: a high-contrast style like Hormozi or Boxed with the active word highlighted.
- Lifestyle or storytelling: Clean, Elegant or Script for a calmer feel.
- Gaming, hype or comedy: Beast, Pow or Fire with bigger, bouncier text.
5. Place captions where people can read them
Instagram overlays its own buttons and caption text at the bottom and right edge. Keep captions in the middle-to-lower area, not the very bottom. The Lower placement preset (about 72% down the frame) is a safe default. If a moment has an important graphic there, drag that single caption elsewhere.
6. Export and upload
Export at 1080p. If the file is large, run it through a video compressor before uploading so it sends quickly on mobile data. Because the captions are burned into the video they will show on every device.
