How to Compress a Video for WhatsApp, Instagram and Email

Make big videos small without ruining quality: the settings that matter, how long it takes, and how to do it privately in your browser.

How to Compress a Video for WhatsApp, Instagram and Email

Phone videos can be hundreds of megabytes. Messaging apps and email set limits, and uploads on slow connections are painful. Compressing the video first solves both.

What actually makes a video big

  • Resolution: 4K has four times the pixels of 1080p.
  • Bitrate: how much data is spent per second of video.
  • Frame rate: 60 fps needs more data than 30 fps.
  • Length: obviously.
  • WhatsApp: 720p, medium-high compression and 64 kbps audio keeps most clips small enough to send as video.
  • Instagram and TikTok: 1080p is fine; use moderate compression, they re-encode anyway.
  • Email: 480p–720p with strong compression.

Steps

  1. Open the Video Compressor and drop your file.
  2. Set the maximum height (720p for sharing, 1080p for posting).
  3. Move the compression slider — higher numbers mean smaller files.
  4. Run it, compare the result size and download.

Because it runs in your browser, the video never leaves your device. Processing speed depends on your computer; expect roughly the length of the clip.
